Patients on dexamethasone may experience fewer overall side effects due to its relative lack of mineralocorticosteroid effects and consequently lower sodium retention than seen with other steroids, but there can be an increase in the risk for hypotension, tachycardia, pulmonary edema, and other potentially serious side effects, as well as for the need for treatment with additional and higher doses of dexamethasone (6).
The side effects seen with dexamethasone include severe gastrointestinal distress with vomiting, nausea, constipation, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea (7), winsolutions. Therefore, dexamethasone’s ability to affect nerve fibers in the brain is dependent on the neurotransmitter being released, anabolic steroid zits.
